Summary:
The novel follows Ramanath, a middle-class man who falls into the trap of materialism and greed. Ramanath is married to Jalpa, a simple yet beautiful woman who loves ornaments. To maintain his social status and fulfill his wife’s desire for jewelry, Ramanath borrows money beyond his means. Caught in a web of debt and societal pressures, he becomes involved in fraudulent activities, stealing government funds to buy ornaments for Jalpa.
When his crime is discovered, he flees, leaving Jalpa behind. The rest of the story delves into how Jalpa, despite her initial love for material possessions, matures and grows morally strong. She eventually realizes the value of integrity over material wealth. Ramanath’s escape leads him to introspection and guilt, as he comes to understand the consequences of his actions.
Themes:
The novel is a critique of the prevailing societal norms and human weaknesses, making it a significant piece of Indian literature.
