Black Ties and White Lies-
Is never black and white. One minute you’...re a struggling graphic designer in LA that’s finally coming to terms with being single forever, and the next you’re flying to New York in a private jet to get engaged to your ex-boyfriend’s older brother. At least…that’s what everyone thinks. Forced to clean up his playboy image in order to protect his company, Beckham Sinclair, the city’s most eligible billionaire bachelor, wants me to be his fake fiancée and personal assistant. Now I’m spending every spare second with a man I thought I’d never see again. My freshly mended heart has barely recovered from the first time a Sinclair broke it. But with each passing day, Beck’s dirty mouth and lingering stares make me question his motives—and mine. As the line blurs between real and pretend, only one thing is certain: there are secrets hiding in this city full of black ties and white lies. Black Ties and White Lies is a billionaire, fake relationship, forced proximity, and ex’s older brother novel and a complete standalone by Kat Singleton. Review: Soapy and immensely bingeable, I can see why this surged in popularity so quickly. I loved the first interaction between the couple, and I was thinking, “this is ridiculous, I love it.” That slowly transitioned into, “well, this is getting ridiculous,” until I emotionally detached and was simply curious how it all played out. There’s a ton of potential in the story – playboy billionaire buys a company just so he can speak to his brother’s ex/new employee/future fake fiancée! – but a lot of it went unfulfilled for me. I think a round of editing would’ve done WONDERS for this, as there were lots of grammatical issues, things that were entirely implausible, and relationship development that evolved in a weird way. However, I really enjoyed the heart of the story, and I wouldn’t hesitate to check out more from the author once she gets through a few growing pains. The story follows Margo, a woman who is shocked to discover that her terrible ex’s older brother is her new boss. After her boyfriend of three years revealed himself to be a serial cheater, Margo cut off all contact – including to the mysterious and s*xy brother she only met one time. Turns out, Beck wasn’t calling to try to convince Margo to take his brother back. On the contrary, he’s offering her the role of real assistant and fake fiancée in an attempt to clean up his playboy image… and he was willing to purchase a company to make that happen. Margo isn’t sure what to make of the situation, but she can’t deny that she’s drawn to Beck in a way that she shouldn’t be. His brother already broke her heart, so she’s determined not to put it on the line again, but that’s easier said than done. Let’s start with the good for a minute. I found this to be really easy to devour – there was something about the over-the-top ridiculousness that grabbed my attention, and I was genuinely curious how it would all play out. I could tell that it was inspired by tropes that I know and love, and the vibes were working for me. I liked that Beck seemed to have deeper feelings than he was letting on (his jealousy and possessiveness made that clear), and the brother swapping didn’t bother me in the slightest. It was the execution that was lacking. First, I had some questions – why would a graphic designer take a job as a coffee fetcher for so little incentive? How did she even know it was Beck calling, if they only had one quick interaction? Was he wearing a tuxedo… to the office? Then there were larger concerns, like how things turned s*xual so quickly. It was all very instalove on both sides, which didn’t make a whole lot of sense, because Margo had already been burned by his brother, and Beck was literally in need of a fake fiancée since he’d been sleeping around so much. The story doesn’t address some of the things I was most curious about or even develop the emotional connection very well, yet it’s not a short book. I really don’t know how it ended up feeling so s*x-focused and surface level, but that was the case. The (plentiful) spice was also a little eye-rolling. So, there’s no way that I could rate this any higher, but a lot of it was compelling. Maybe not good, but compelling. About the Author: Kat SingletonRelated
